Crain’s Small Business Roundtables

October began with much energy that has not let up yet.

3bCrainsFun1a

The Network of Entrepreneurial Women was invited to Crain’s Small Business Week, and we hosted an afternoon of networking, business discussions, and fun at Shannon’s Irish Pub in Glen Ellyn.

We had some wonderful and lively ladies attend and each of us took away new wisdom.

Karen McCormack hosted a roundtable discussion on health care reform, which garnered a lot of attention and discussion. She had prepared some handouts for us that shed more light on the upcoming changes, including the different healthcare standardized plans, called metallic tiers.

7bCrainsHealthcare2

Navigators are available to assist consumers in enrolling in a plan on the new (insurance) Marketplace. Navigators are not licensed insurance brokers and cannot offer advice about the insurance itself.  Healthcare brokers can assist in determining whether one should change to one of  the new plans or allow a ‘grandfather clause’ to take effect and stay in their current plan for another year.

“People will still deal with health insurance companies.
They will either get help paying for it or not.”
~ Karen McCormack

Karen is a certified healthcare broker, which is different from a navigator. She has federal and state licenses, certifications to sell on the new marketplaces and is also certified in Medicare. Her consultation is free of charge and provides a well-researched overview of individual options, including catastrophic supplemental plans. She has extensive knowledge and experience with health insurance and the companies that provide this insurance.

7cCrainsHealthcare3

“Our country is undergoing a paradigm shift in the way that insurance is delivered and used by consumers. We are all learning what this means individually, but insurance brokers have been immersed in the changes for the past several years and are on the front end of the learning curve,” Karen said.

Technology expert Erica Thomas facilitated a discussion on social media, something many business owners are daunted by. Highlights of her discussion included insider tips on how to maximize the impact of social media for business, and group collaboration on how to translate successful traditional marketing techniques into equally successful online marketing campaigns.

figures3

Erica shared several of her tried-and-true tips for managing an effective social media presence for your business, focusing on methods she has used in social media consultations for years, and on what she has learned as one of two lead programmers at NetworkHoncho.com.

5CrainsSocialMediaTable

Then, each attendee shared what their favorite traditional non-internet methods of marketing were, and the entire roundtable group participated in suggestions for using the same methods online.

crains

The most popular non-internet marketing was word-of-mouth, and each roundtable found itself noting how mind-to-mind business connections online, when approached correctly, can be as effective for business as face-to-face interactions.

Then those who hadn’t visited my table yet gathered for a fun and colorful creative session.

Creatifity

Even those claiming not to have a crafty bone in their body realized that making a flower and a stick figure is easier than it seems. To me it is the perfect analogy to business and life. We can look at a straight line and bend it any way we want to.

creativity2

You can be daunted by the end goal but it might be simpler to complete a project than it seems.

flowers

Like pipe cleaners, life is very forgiving in letting us make changes, and we can infuse our own personality into our business and our lives.

Our roundtables were followed by Shannon’s delicious dining options, and we had a blast toasting to a successful day. More photos are in our Meetup album, and past events can be perused on this blog.

Art for Healing: an evening at the Awakenings Center

Last Thursday the Network of Entrepreneurial Women took in vibrant art, delicious snacks and some vino at the Awakenings Foundation Center.  The foundation unveiled My Fire: the Alchemy of Abuse by author and artist Gabriel Orion Marie, a new exhibit in their gallery.

Awakeningsgallery

“She’s alive, she’s healed, and she’s sharing it with us.”
~ Jean Cozier about Gabriel Orion Marie’s exhibit

We connected with fellow entrepreneurs, most of whom were drawn to this venue from a professional interest as (aspiring) therapists and counselors. After the introductions, Awakenings Founder and President Jean Cozier introduced us to the art work gracing the high walls of this loft space.

Jeanpresenting

“We were moved by the art
and heartened by the positive impact it has had
on the artists and by the greater understanding shared
and communicated to the viewer.
It was a lively, enriching evening, and
we were so glad to learn more about the foundation and gallery.”

~ Erica Thomas

The Awakenings Foundation administers the Judith Dawn Memorial Fund for the Arts, a program that makes financial awards to survivors who wish to pursue the creative arts as a means of healing, empowerment, and expression. The fund has awarded $75,000 to 80 grant recipients since 1998.

GalleryWindows

The Awakenings Center showcases art work by multiple artists who have used art as a way of healing from their sexual abuse. As she administered the Memorial Fund, Jean felt that people were looking for a way to present their story. Jean started with her personal collection and then began curating different artists, including memorial fund recipients. In addition to visual art, the foundation seeks to host performing arts such as music, dance and literary expression.

GroupPhoto

The Awakenings Center is part of the Ravenswood Art Walk this year and expects to have 800-1,000 visitors come through its doors. Currently, the gallery is staffed Wednesdays through Fridays from 11 am to 4 p.m., but setting up an appointment by e-mail is recommended. The center is open to hosting group events, which can be arranged by e-mail as well.

After this enriching evening, the NEW co-founders planned the remaining events for the year over savory and sweet desserts. You can see what’s coming up on our Meetup page.

The Awakenings Foundation is a center which supports the healing of survivors of sexual abuse through artistic expression. The artwork of Gabriel Orion Marie will be available for a special preview, and the new Judith Dawn Memorial Gallery will open its door for the first time. The evening will also feature a tour of the Main Gallery along with wine and light refreshments.

awakeningssign

The mission of the Awakenings Foundation is to support the healing of artists who are survivors of rape and/or sexual abuse, and to share their stories with the public as a means of raising awareness about the problems faced by survivors in our culture. Most survivors find it empowering to share their stories and get feedback, and this gallery offers an exhibit space to do so. The Awakenings Foundation hopes that visitors leave with a greater sense of understanding and compassion for all who struggle to heal from sexual violence. It is estimated that one out of every three girls, and one out of every five boys, will be sexually violated in some manner before they turn eighteen.

Syncing at Symphony’s

Last week the Network of Entrepreneurial Women enjoyed a delicious meal at Symphony’s Cafe during our progressive networking dinner event.

Evanston has so many wonderful dining options that I had not yet tried this restaurant, but I was not disappointed. Their goat cheese appetizer was a luxurious way to kick off the evening. I had their risotto twice since I took some of it home (too busy chatting), and their chocolate mousse desserts had already been praised to me by locals.

NEW Co-Founder Karen of McCormack Consulting had prepared ice breaker questions to get our conversations started. Ultimately the conversations flowed easily, but it was wonderful to learn more about each woman.

questions

For the most intriguing question: “What is the most interesting thing you’ve ever done in your business, past or present?” NEW Co-Founder Erica of  reported the following responses.

Marianne Guinee made such a change from what was already a successful (but time intensive) career to a more relaxed, fulfilling position as Marketing Director for Melaleuca.

chatting

Lina Angelov, owner of Linita Creations said that making jewelry was the most unusual thing she did: “I never thought I was creative enough,” she said. However, Lina said, “I realized I did have the creativity in me.”

Karen York, Professional Organizer and Owner of Organize Me, recalled a particularly “rewarding situation” when she met the challenge to assist a client that was moving and had several vital events scheduled “all in less than a week”.

We ended the evening gathering all around one table and lingering over dessert. Speaking of bonding, I was thrilled that both Karen and Erica wore my earrings (unplanned)!

Progressive dining at Symphony’s

I’m excited about my dinner out this week. On Thursday the Positively NEW ladies will gather for a Progressive Networking Dinner at Evanston’s Symphony’s Cafe. We’ll have cozy tête-à-têtes while rotating tables between appetizers, entree, and dessert to maximize the networking fun.

NEWSymphonyPic

Symphony’s Cafe, located at 1945 Central Street in Evanston, offers vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes and a wine list to add the ‘Wine’ to Wine, Women and Wellness. It’ll be another culinary adventure in my home town, along with the enriching company of fellow entrepreneurial women. I highly recommend making an afternoon of it and perusing the entrepreneurial shops along this street, many woman-owned.

 SymphNorthCentral

Coin metered parking (free after 6 p.m.) is available along the streets, and a freshly rehabbed credit card metered lot is located just west of the restaurant, next to Independence Park via Stewart Avenue.
